Chemo-enzymatic synthesis and characterization of new biosourced anti-UV molecules for the cosmetic industry

The ABI Chair is dedicated to the development of expertise ranging from the plant to
the biosourced materials and other molecules of interest in an integrative approach.
Starting from raw material resources, this Chair is interested in the development of
new sustainable transformation processes (white biotechnology, green chemistry and
separative sciences). The research activities currently underway within the ABI Chair
are dedicated to the development of new biosourced materials/polymers from
biomass synthons and the production of molecules of interest using green chemistry
and/or bioconversion of biorefinery by-products.

Within the framework of the ANR project SinapUV : (Bio) synthesis and study of the
physicochemical and biological properties of analogues of sinapoyl malate : new nontoxic and biosourced anti-UV molecules for the cosmetic industry, sustainable and
innovative alternatives are sought to replace the molecules currently used as anti-UV
in the field of cosmetics. This project mobilizes an academic/private consortium
covering the entire value chain : metabolic engineering and synthetic biology (Micalis,
Abolis), production of synthons by fermentation and purification (ABI Chair),
(bio)chemical modifications and characterizations, toxicological evaluations
(INSERM/Givaudan Active Beauty) and formulation (Givaudan Active Beauty).

Mission
Within the "chemistry" team of the ABI Chair, the candidate will be responsible for the
synthesis of a library of derivatives of sinapic acid, their purification and their
characterization. Then the properties of the molecules (anti-UV, anti-radical,
hydrophilic/lipophilic balance) will be evaluated to determine QSARs (structuresactivities relationships) in order to optimize their design. In a second step, an optimization and a scaling up of the synthesis of the best candidates will be
conducted.

Profile
The candidate must have a PhD in organic chemistry, as well as strong analytical
chemistry skills. Experience in biocatalysis or design of experiment will be a plus.
The candidate must show a spirit of scientific openness to collaborate with all the
stakeholders of the project.
